Crispy Chili Crisp Tofu (That Actually Has Flavor)
Tofu gets blamed for being bland more often than it deserves. On its own, it’s mild, but that’s also why it works so well as a base for stronger flavors. The bigger issue is texture. Soft, under-seasoned tofu with barely any color isn’t doing much for anyone, but crispy tofu with a flavorful coating is a completely different situation.
This recipe leans into what tofu does best while giving it a little help from Mama Teav’s Hot Garlic Chili Crisp. The tofu develops crisp golden edges, while the garlic, chilies, and crunchy bits create a coating that actually sticks instead of sliding off. The result is something with texture in every bite and enough flavor to stand on its own.
Ingredients
- 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
- 2 tablespoons Mama Teav’s Hot Garlic Chili Crisp
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon neutral oil
Instructions
- Pat the tofu dry and toss the cubes with soy sauce.
- Sprinkle the tofu with cornstarch and toss until lightly coated.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the neutral oil.
- Cook the tofu for several minutes, turning occasionally, until the edges become golden and crisp.
- Lower the heat and add Mama Teav’s Hot Garlic Chili Crisp, tossing gently so the tofu becomes evenly coated.
- Serve with rice, noodles, or vegetables.
Good tofu usually comes down to texture and seasoning, and this checks both boxes. The crispy exterior gives way to a softer center while the chili crisp adds garlic, heat, and enough savory depth to keep every bite interesting.
